Esta es una historia real. Isidro es un miliciano anarquista en la Barcelona de los primeros momentos de la Guerra Civil. A esta ciudad, llegan brigadistas procedentes de todos los lugares del mundo; entre ellos Käthe, una joven que huye de la Alemania nazi. Así empieza una historia que se desarrolla entre el frente de Aragón, la Barcelona convulsa de 1937 y un campo de concentración, el de Albatera, al que son trasladados, desde el puerto de Alicante, todas las personas que no consiguen partir hacia el exilio al término de la contienda.

Durante los años de la Guerra y los que, tras la derrota, vinieron después, se van sucediendo momentos de solidaridad y amistad, de amor y, también, de sufrimiento. Pero este relato es sobre todo una historia de continua superación entre personas condenadas a vivir con la proximidad de la muerte. Fue la convicción de que iban a sobrevivir la que los animó a ayudarse a lo largo de cada día interminable, consiguiendo así que la brutal represión no los derrotara.
